# Wordfast vs Trados Studio (2026): Price, Features, Mac

Source: https://traduq.com/blog/wordfast-vs-trados · Updated October 13, 2026

## Key takeaways

- Choose Trados Studio if agencies are your main clients and send Trados packages; choose Wordfast Pro if you want a lower fixed cost, work with direct clients, or need macOS or Linux.
- Over three years, a Wordfast Pro license costs $480 against $1,692 for Trados Freelance on its yearly plan (list prices as of October 2026, excluding VAT).
- Wordfast Pro imports Trados SDLPPX packages and opens SDLXLIFF files, so it can take most Trados jobs; test a sample before a large project.
- Trados Studio's desktop editor runs on Windows only. Wordfast Pro runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, via Rosetta on Apple silicon, and Wordfast doesn't guarantee macOS 27.

Wordfast Pro or Trados Studio? 2026 prices, three-year cost, Mac and Linux support, Trados packages, TM features and which to pick.

**Wordfast Pro** is the cheaper, lighter CAT tool: a three-year license from $480 that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and still opens Trados packages. **Trados Studio** costs more and runs on Windows only, but it has deeper features and is the tool most agencies ask for by name, so it is the safer choice if agencies send you most of your work.

Prices and features checked on the vendors' own sites on 13 October 2026; the pages are listed under Sources. For the wider picture, with memoQ, Smartcat and free tools, see [Trados vs memoQ vs Smartcat vs Wordfast](https://traduq.com/blog/cat-tools-comparison).

## Comparison at a glance

- **Price model:** Wordfast Pro is a three-year license with upgrades and support, from $480 as of October 2026, renewed at 50 % ($240). Trados Freelance is a subscription, from $47 a month paid yearly ($564 a year) or $63 month to month, excluding VAT.
- **Three-year cost at list price:** Wordfast Pro $480; Trados Freelance $1,692 on the yearly plan.
- **Platform:** Wordfast Pro runs on Windows, Linux and macOS (via Rosetta on Apple silicon). Trados Studio's desktop editor is supported on Windows only; RWS suggests Parallels on a Mac, and Trados also has a browser editor.
- **Trados packages and SDLXLIFF:** Trados is the native format. Wordfast Pro imports SDLPPX packages and opens SDLXLIFF and memoQ MQXLIFF files.
- **TM and termbase:** Trados stores TMs as SDLTM and includes MultiTerm with Freelance. Wordfast Pro reads and writes TMX 1.4b, holds up to 5 million units per TM, and imports and exports glossaries as TBX or tab-delimited text.
- **Trial:** Both offer one: Trados 14 days, Wordfast a free trial before you buy.
- **Best for:** Trados for translators whose income depends on agencies. Wordfast for direct-client work, Mac or Linux users, and anyone who wants a low fixed cost.

## Price: what you actually pay

Trados has two plans for individuals. **Trados Go** is browser-only, from $35 a month paid yearly as of October 2026, and it does not open project packages, which rules it out for most agency work. **Trados Freelance** combines the desktop and cloud editors, from $47 a month paid yearly, $52 on the annual plan paid monthly, or $63 month to month. New customers get subscriptions; the perpetual licenses in the RWS store are upgrades for existing owners.

Wordfast sells **Wordfast Pro** as a three-year license from $480 as of October 2026 (or $580 for Wordfast Studio, which adds Wordfast Classic for Word). Renewal costs half the list price. Wordfast also gives a 50 % discount in developing economies, and its browser tool, Wordfast Anywhere, is included for license holders.

The gap is large: at list price, three years of Trados Freelance costs about 3.5 times a Wordfast Pro license. Trados sometimes runs promotions, so check its pricing page on the day you buy.

## Features and file compatibility

Both are full CAT tools: segment-by-segment editing, translation memories, glossaries or termbases, QA checks and machine translation plug-ins.

**Trados Studio** goes further on project work. It has stronger QA, MultiTerm for structured terminology, dozens of machine translation apps in the RWS AppStore (DeepL among them), the option to connect a third-party large language model for AI translation, and cloud plans for teams. Its learning curve is steeper, and the Freelance license will not run on company networks.

**Wordfast Pro** is quicker to learn. Its TMs and glossaries are large enough for most freelancers (5 million units per TM, over a million entries per glossary, and you can open several at once). Sharing a TM with colleagues over the internet needs Wordfast Server or Wordfast Anywhere.

On compatibility, Wordfast Pro covers the common Trados case: it imports SDLPPX packages and opens SDLXLIFF files. Some project settings in a package may not carry over, so translate a short sample and send it back before you accept a large job. If a client sends you a Trados TM as an SDLTM file, Wordfast cannot open it directly; convert it to TMX first with the free [SDLTM converter](https://traduq.com/tools/sdltm-converter).

## Mac and Linux

This is where Wordfast wins clearly. Trados Studio has no macOS version, so Mac users need Windows in a virtual machine or the browser editor. memoQ is in the same situation, as [memoQ vs Trados](https://traduq.com/blog/memoq-vs-trados) explains.

Wordfast Pro has macOS and Linux versions, with two caveats. On Apple silicon Macs it needs Apple's Rosetta, which Apple is phasing out, and Wordfast says it cannot guarantee Wordfast Pro will run on macOS 27, which Apple released in September 2026. On Intel Macs, Wordfast lists no support from macOS Sonoma onward. Check its product page before you upgrade macOS, or keep a way back to your current version.

## Popularity and reviews

Review scores mix old versions, editions and use cases, so they say little about your situation. What matters more is what your clients ask for. Many agencies, especially large ones, list Trados in their job posts and send Trados packages. Wordfast has a smaller user base, so fewer clients request it by name, though many accept any tool that returns a clean SDLXLIFF.

A practical test: look at the last ten jobs you were offered or wanted. If most named Trados, that is your answer.

## Which to pick

- **You work mostly for agencies that send Trados packages:** Trados Studio. The compatibility is worth the price, and the tool is a recognised skill on your profile.
- **You work mostly with direct clients:** Wordfast Pro. Clients rarely care which tool you use, and the lower fixed cost goes straight to your margin.
- **You are on a Mac and don't want to run Windows:** Wordfast Pro, keeping the macOS 27 caveat in mind, or a native tool such as CafeTran Espresso or OmegaT (see [memoQ alternatives](https://traduq.com/blog/memoq-alternatives) for both).
- **You are starting out:** Wordfast Pro or a free tool, plus the Trados 14-day trial to learn the basics before an agency asks.
- **You want both:** many translators start with Wordfast and add Trados when an agency requires it.

If neither fits, see [the best Trados alternatives](https://traduq.com/blog/trados-alternatives).

## Free tools that help with either

TraduQ is not a CAT tool; it is a free marketplace with free browser tools that process your files locally, so nothing is uploaded. Three of them work alongside Wordfast or Trados:

- The [QA checker](https://traduq.com/tools/qa-checker) checks XLIFF and SDLXLIFF files for number, tag, terminology, punctuation and consistency errors before delivery.
- The [SDLTM converter](https://traduq.com/tools/sdltm-converter) turns a Trados TM into TMX that Wordfast can import.
- The [word count and quote tool](https://traduq.com/tools/translation-quote) counts words by match band against your TM and prices the job with CAT discounts.
